How it works

What the color is actually made of

Flake is not paint and it is not a sticker. It is vinyl chip broadcast into a wet base coat and locked under clear. Here is the order it happens in.

1. Ground, never etched

We diamond grind the slab open so the base coat bonds into the concrete instead of sitting on top of it. Cracks, pits and pop-outs get filled before any color goes down.

2. Broadcast to refusal

Flake gets thrown into the wet base until the floor will not take any more. Full refusal is what gives the finished floor even color instead of thin spots and shadows.

3. Scraped and topcoated

The next day we scrape the loose chip back, vacuum, and roll clear over the top. That clear is the part you walk on, and it is what carries the wear and the chemical resistance.

Chip size

Size changes the look more than color does

Most blends come in three chip sizes. Same colors, very different floor. If you are not sure, we bring both a quarter inch and an eighth inch sample of whatever you like.

1/4 inch

The standard, and what most garages get. Bold, obvious chips and the most texture underfoot. Hides dirt and slab imperfection best of the three.

1/8 inch

Tighter and more uniform. From standing height it reads closer to stone or terrazzo than to a chip floor. A common pick for kitchens, showrooms and living space.

1/16 inch

Almost a speckle. Use it when you want the color without the floor pulling focus. Least texture, so it is the least forgiving of a rough slab.

Blends marked Hybrid are pre-mixed at multiple sizes by the manufacturer and are not broken out by chip size.

UV+ is what goes outside, and standard flake is not

Ordinary vinyl chip and ordinary clear will amber and chalk in full East Texas sun. The UV+ line uses pigment and a topcoat built for it, so the Outdoor blends in the catalogue are the ones we will quote for a patio, a pool deck or an exposed porch.

Indoors the rule flips. In a garage with normal light any blend on this page holds its color, and the extra cost of UV+ buys you nothing.

The honest version

Nothing coated stays exactly the color it was on day one outdoors. UV+ slows the change to the point where you will not notice it year to year, but a shaded porch and a full-sun pool deck are not going to age at the same rate.

If someone tells you an outdoor coating will never change color, ask what exactly they are warrantying and get the answer in writing.

Questions

Picking a color

Can I see a real sample before I commit?

Yes, and you should. Pick two or three from this page and we bring physical sample boards to the walkthrough. Color on a screen is a shortlist, not a match, and the same blend reads differently under shop lights than it does in daylight.

Do all of these cost the same?

Most standard flake blends price the same. Hybrid, Mica Enhanced and UV+ blends carry a material upcharge. That shows up on the written quote before anything gets ordered, so you will never find it after the fact.

What if I want a color that is not on this page?

Torginol can custom blend. It adds lead time and comes with a minimum order, so it is worth raising at the walkthrough rather than after you have planned around a date.

Which chip size should I pick?

A quarter inch for garages and shops, an eighth for anything you want reading like stone. If you are torn, say so and we bring both sizes of the same blend so you can set them side by side on your own slab.

Will the floor feel rough?

There is texture, and that is deliberate. It is most of what gives a flake floor its grip when it is wet. Smaller chip means less texture, and if slip is a specific concern we can adjust the topcoat rather than change the color.

How soon can I use the floor?

Light foot traffic the day after we finish, vehicles a couple of days after that. Cold or humid weather stretches it, and the exact cure schedule for your system is written on your quote.
